Third man charged with attempted murder after Stockbury Valley caravan fire

Detectives investigating a caravan fire at a traveller site have charged a third man.

Officers were called to the site, off the A249 Stockbury Valley, where they discovered the caravan alight along with nearby vehicles.

Following the fire on Saturday, May 5, Billy Smith snr, 52, and Billy Smith jnr, 28, both of Miller Close in Kemsley were charged with four counts of attempted murder, one count of arson and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Today Eli Smith, of Lewis Close, Faversham, has been arrested and charged with the same offences.

He was remanded in custody after appearing at Medway Magistrates Court today.

He will appear at Maidstone Crown Court on June 4, the same date as Billy Smith Snr and Billy Smith Jnr, who have been remanded in custody.

Three men aged 54, 23 and 20, all from Stockbury, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed until June 1.

A 22-year-old Sheerness woman arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal damage has been bailed until May 31.

All of the people involved are known to each other and officers are conducting ongoing enquiries.
