Tribute to John Stewart who died after being hit by car in Seven Mile Lane, Mereworth

A grandfather who died after being hit by a car has been described as a "loving, gentle man" in a touching tribute issued by his family.

John Stewart, from Brenchley, died after being knocked down by the silver Toyota Auris on the A228 Seven Mile Lane in Mereworth at around 6pm last Wednesday.

Today, the 79-year-old's family said he would be sadly missed.

In a statement, they said: "A loving, gentle man and father of three John was also a grandad and great-grandad.

"He loved the great outdoors where he worked as a woodsman, enjoying coppicing and fence making. John will be sadly missed by all his loved ones and friends."

An investigation has been launched and police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the tragedy, which happened at the junction with Old Church Road.
