A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "During the summer months, it's only natural to want to be outside, enjoying a barbecue with family and friends. But there are dangers that lurk behind such fun pursuits.

"Using petrol to light your barbecue or leaving it unattended are two of the most common mistakes people make.

"Every summer this results in firefighters being called to fires caused by barbecues that have got out of control. In some instances, this has led to serious injuries and damage to property."

The fire service advises people to never leave a barbecue unattended or put ashes straight into a dustbin.
