Maidstone: Day two of Ramblin' Man Fair at Mote Park

Music and mud in Mote Park - what more could you want?

Ramblin’ Man Fair’s second day delivered everything from recorder solos to incredible stage outfits as the festival continued in Maidstone.

Yesterday saw a huge number of bands from around the world come together to deliver a variety of styles in polished and passionate performances.

With so much going on across four stages, as well as a re-enactment village, fun and games and stalls, it was impossible to watch everything.

One of the artists kicking off the day was blues singer Caitlin Koch, performing on the Outlaw Country Stage.

Although you might not have heard her name before, this Nashville-based New Yorker has performed with artists including Tears for Fears and the Goo Goo Dolls.

She delivered an electric set demonstrating her incredible vocal range perfectly.

Another highlight was Trucker Diablo, from Northern Ireland, on the Rising Stage.

These guys are going somewhere - mixing southern rock with metal influences, their sound is filled with incredible riffs, stomping drums and perfect vocals.

The Kyle Gass Band had a rather odd but thoroughly enjoyable performance, combining musical perfection with fun.

You might know Kyle from his days as one half of comedy metal film duo Tenacious D with Jack Black but his musical prowess is a far cry from those days, yet still keeping the clever lyricism and fun.

Plus, I can guarantee it’s the only performance of the weekend featuring a double recorder solo delivered by a man in a robe.

Glenn Hughes pulled one of the largest crowds, despite torrential downpours threating to lower the mood.

This man, with his incredible vocals and pearly white teeth, is possible best known as one of the front men for Deep Purple.

He knows what the crowd want, as he played songs from his solo career punctuated with big hits, ending on a storming rendition of ‘Burn’ which culminated in a mass sing-along.

Moving into the evening and the rain continued, with huge pools of mud collecting at the front of the main stage.

But festival-goers were not put off as they enjoyed brilliant music from Rival Sons on the Grooverider stage and Dokken on the main stage.

Extreme, a late 80s/early 90s hair metal band from Boston, took up the helm as headliners for the Saturday.

Speaking to people around and my statement of “I’m not too familiar with their work” was constantly met with “you’ll know their stuff, don’t worry” – and they were right.

With electric energy and a real sense of fun, these men know what they’re doing, delivering a stripped down performance of ‘More Than Words’ to eager ears.

What’s happening today?

There’s a switch around of stages, with Prog in the Park and Blues stages being swapped in.

ZZ Top, complete with infamous beards, will deliver one of the most highly anticipated performances of the festival this evening.
