Maidstone neighbours in firing line of rock-throwing yobs

People living in several streets are under siege by yobs bombarding their homes and cars with rocks from a resurfaced road.

Last year resurfacing and levelling work was carried out by Golding Homes on a service road running behind Plains Avenue, Devon Road and Somerset Road, after residents complained of potholes causing damage to their cars.

The road which connects rear gardens and a nearby park, was resurfaced with loose stone chips.

Since then Plains Avenue residents Roy and Sharon Gravenell say they have been repeatedly targeted by youths using the ready supply of ammunition.

Last month their cars were both damaged by rocks.

“If they are thrown they are big enough to smash a window or cut a head. It needs to be redone properly”

Mr Gravenell said: “I was upstairs and I heard a thud. I went into the back garden and saw six kids standing on the service road. I heard an almighty bang and I saw they had thrown a rock onto my wife’s car.”

Police were called and Mr Gravenell chased the group up the road, but no further action was taken.

Earlier in the year Mr Gravenell said his conservatory door was smashed, while the garden of a disabled neighbour was also targeted.

In exasperation he built a wooden porch in his garden to protect his property and he is now calling on Golding Homes, which owns the road, to solve the problem once and for all.

He said: “I have been here for 30 years and I have never had anything like this happen until now. My feeling is this has been badly handled. My wife is worried to stay alone in the house when I go to work.”

Fellow Plains Avenue resident, Liecy Flisher, 26, added: “What used to be on the road was very fine, but these are like big boulders.

The full-time carer added: “If they are thrown they are big enough to smash a window or cut a head. It needs to be redone properly.”

Claire Boxall, spokesman for Golding Homes, said the cost of resurfacing the service road would be more than £30,000.

She said: “Our neighbourhood advisor has been made aware of the complaints of anti-social behaviour and we will work with police and the residents to tackle this. We ask residents to report to us or the police any further incidents.”

A police spokesman said it had received a report of stones being thrown and hitting a vehicle, but advised residents to report all cases.
