Maidstone academy defender Alfie Kitt is going on trial with Championship club Millwall.

London rivals Charlton were also interested but centre-half Kitt, 17, has chosen the Lions.

He's likely to play in an under-18 game against Ipswich on Saturday as he looks to secure a scholarship and maybe even a professional deal.

Kitt, who scored in a League Cup win over Herne Bay this season, joined United's academy as a left-back following his release by Gillingham.

Maidstone converted him into a centre-half - a decision that's paid off.

Stones have already seen former Ben Swift join Aston Villa this season and academy boss Jack Parkinson believes Kitt is capable of making it in the pro game.

Parkinson said: "There's been quite a bit of interest in the academy since Swifty went to Villa.

"Millwall called to ask how Alfie was getting on. I said they should be the judge and to come down and watch him in an under-21 game.

"Charlton happened to phone as well and wanted him to go there for a trial but he's chosen Millwall.

"It'll be a trial like Swifty's where he'll be monitored week-to-week.

"He's a different player to Swifty, who's a proper old-school defender.

"Alfie's more technical and good on the ball and he strikes a lovely ball on his left foot.

"At the start of the season I wouldn't have thought a move for Swifty would have happened so quickly but a lot of pro clubs are looking these days.

"There seems to be a shortage of decent centre-halves, especially at a younger age.

"Alfie used to play left-back at Gillingham but we felt he'd be better at centre-half attacking things.

"Sometimes you change a player's position and it doesn't work but Alfie's kicked on."
