Coach Paul Hathaway has admitted it has been hard for his Maidstone team not to think about playing at Twickenham.

Maidstone’s dream of a national final at the home of rugby will come true on Saturday if they beat Gloucestershire-based Coney Hall in their Intermediate Cup regional final at The Mote.

Hathaway said: “It’s difficult because as much as you tell players to keep their minds on the job in hand, without doubt, players’ minds and those of the coaches, have been wandering towards Twickenham.

“The players are looking forward to it. We’ll raise our game again to perform on the big stage.”

The incentive of a final at Twickenham underlines just what is at stake as Maidstone – who have been beaten at this stage twice before – remain on course for a league and cup double.

“Twickenham is the home of rugby and every player aspires to play there regardless of ability,” said Hathaway.

“We’d love to have the opportunity. It would be great both for the individuals but also for the club.

“They’ve fallen at this hurdle before and it’s about putting right that wrong."

The game kicks off at 2.30pm.
