Former Tonbridge striker Mark Lovell turned out for Maidstone in the League Cup as a favour.

Lovell played 84 minutes of Stones' 4-2 win over Cray Wanderers on Tuesday night.

He's been without a club since leaving Angels at the end of last season - work commitments forcing football to take a back seat - but he accepted Jay Saunders' offer of a game.

Stones boss Saunders said: "I've known Mark a long time.

"He came to watch us at Lewes. I had a chat with him afterwards and said he'd be more than welcome to train with us if he wanted to keep himself ticking over.

"I then rung him last week and said I was looking to rest the boys in the League Cup and did he fancy a game.

"He was keen and it wasn't like bringing in someone who doesn't know the level.

"Considering he's hardly done any training, he put in a good performance.

"He's had a few offers since leaving Tonbridge but it's one of them where work has made it hard to commit to football.

"He's said any time I need him to give him a call and that's what I'll do.

"I don't know if he'll be involved in league games, because we have a big squad, but we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

"He'll always give 100% and I like players like that."
