Ten-year-old Fran Saunders, son of manager Jay, opens Maidstone's new stand

Jay Saunders’ 10-year-old son Fran opened Maidstone’s new stand on Tuesday night.

It was a lovely gesture from co-owners Oliver Ash and Terry Casey and the perfect choice to reflect the club’s family reputation.

Mr Ash and Mr Casey led the opening ceremony before handing over the microphone to Fran, who declared the £750,000 terrace open, in front of almost 3,000 fans.

Stones boss Jay said: “Oliver asked me this afternoon in the office, he said we want a child to open it, someone involved with the club and he asked me to ask Fran.

“I was a bit surprised he was up for it. I think it’s because his sister was jealous, that made sure he wanted to do it!

“It’s very kind of Oliver and Terry to ask him.

“It was a great night and a great atmosphere in here and, like I say, you can see what a difference the stand makes.”

Maidstone drew 1-1 with Sutton. Read the match report here.
