Ditton's Barry Hawkins admits there is room for improvement after stuttering start to Welsh Open

Barry Hawkins believes he will have to improve if he is to reach the last 16 of the Welsh Open after victory over Robbie Williams on Tuesday.

The Ditton potter snatched his second-round match in the final frame to beat Williams 4-3 in a hard-fought encounter.

Hawkins’ progression means he will face his good friend Mark Davis in the third round and he knows he’ll have to rely on skill more than luck to seal the win.

“I could've easily been going home in my first two matches, they've been a bit scrappy and I didn't perform that well,” said Hawkins.

“I'm lucky to still be in the tournament so hopefully I can improve in the next round and play some good snooker.

“I'll have to play a lot better than I did here to beat Mark. It'll be a good match and it's not nice to play your friend but that's the way it is.”

The Welsh Open is being shown live on Eurosport all week and Eurosport’s expert line-up includes five-time world champion Ronnie “The Rocket” O’Sullivan, six-time World Championship finalist Jimmy “The Whirlwind” White, 1986 world champion Joe Johnson and former world No.3 Neal Foulds.

Hawkins’ campaign continues on Wednesday afternoon. And the 36-year-old says that despite having to fight for survival at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena this week his approach to his games has been right.

“I feel like my form is there and I feel like it could come out at anytime, but getting the attitude right is the main thing,” added Hawkins.

“Best-of-seven matches have a different mentality and you've got to remind yourself that it's a major tournament.

“It was very hard work, I looked like going home in the sixth frame. I was 30 or 40 behind, he gave me a chance and I managed to make a nice break to go 3-3 and I controlled the last frame.

“I could've won it in one visit but the main thing is that I'm through. I was pleased with my attitude and I dug deep at the end.”

Eurosport is the Home of Snooker, showing 19 tournaments per season, including the World Championship, UK Championship, Welsh Open and the Masters, as well as the exclusive series ‘The Ronnie O’Sullivan Show’.?
