Reaction from Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders after 4-2 win at Woking

Jay Saunders enjoyed the moment as Maidstone won from two goals down at Woking - then stressed the need for calm.

United are four points clear of the National League relegation zone after Jamar Loza’s hat-trick and Yemi Odubade’s goal in a 4-2 win at Kingfield on Saturday.

Celebrations in the dugout matched those on the terraces as Maidstone stunned their drop rivals to make it seven games unbeaten.

But manager Saunders quickly turned his attention to the bigger picture with next week’s home game against Barrow followed by long trips to Gateshead, Macclesfield and Wrexham.

He said: “I don’t want to get carried away and the boys won’t get carried away.

“I’ll make sure of that because you look at the run we’ve got coming up and they’re tough games.

“What we’ve done is made the job a little bit easier and given ourselves a better chance of staying in the league.

“But you go and lose your next few games and you’re back in a lot of trouble so we’ve just got to concentrate on Barrow and after that, we’ll worry about the travelling games.”

Former Stones loanee Delano Sam-Yorke scored the goal Saunders predicted - replays showed it was onside - and Jamie Lucas made it two before Loza triggered the fightback with a superb strike.

The Stones boss said: “Jam’s been good of late. He had a little spell out the team and it was difficult for him but he’s shown the reaction you want as a manager.

“That’s seven unbeaten now and I’ve been saying we’ve shown that mental toughness that we didn’t have earlier in the season.

“We’d go 2-0 down and that was game over. The last time we played Woking we were having a good spell, went 2-0 down and that was game over, and I think now when we’ve gone behind we don’t seem to crumble as much and that’s full credit to the lads.

“We were 2-1 down and I think Nicky Southall (Stones assistant) said to me, a point wouldn’t be a bad result and all of a sudden you win 4-2.

“It was a good second-half performance and a good first 15 minutes but I felt the boys were a little bit over-confident coming into game.

“You could sense it but they gave us a good response and it’s a good three points but I don’t want to hype it up as a massive three points.

“It’s a good three points and we move on.”
