Maidstone United defender Magnus Okuonghae praises his old Dagenham boss John Still

Maidstone defender Magnus Okuonghae makes a quick return to title-chasing Dagenham tonight.

Stones are off to Victoria Road to face the Daggers, whose boss John Still led United to the Conference title in 1989.

Still signed Okuounghae three times - twice for Dagenham and once at Luton - hailing the big centre-half as a 'beast'.

The 31-year-old is looking forward to seeing his old manager as United look to climb out of the National League bottom four.

He said: “I like Stilly. He’s a good man and a good manager who looks after his players.

"I have nothing but kind words to say about him.

"He’s one of those managers that you have to work for to really understand him.

"From afar, people might pass judgement on the way he goes about playing but when you’ve played for him, you appreciate just how good he is."

Okuonghae was on the bench for the draw at Braintree on Saturday.

When he gets his chance, he's ready to show the qualities that made him such a favourite of Stones legend Still.

Okuonghae said: “I like to try and do my job, whatever it takes.

“One of the first things said to me was that defending is an attitude and that’s stayed with me through my career.

“There’s no better feeling than coming off the pitch with a clean sheet having made a few blocks and interceptions and not letting your man score from a set-piece.

“I think it’s important you know your role in the team.

“My role is not to win the game, my role is to defend.”

Still was in the crowd at Braintree but Stones boss Jay Saunders doubts he learned much from the goalless draw.

Saunders said: "I don’t think you can come away and read a lot into that because if you look at us the last couple of games compared to that, we’ve played completely the opposite.

"It was needs must. We had to dig deep and get stuck in and defend properly and we did that.

"It's a bigger pitch at Dagenham so hopefully we can get the ball down and play a bit more.

"Dagenham are obviously doing well in the league so we go there as underdogs but we can go there and have a real good go at them."
