Maidstone United 0 Bognor Regis Town 1 match report

A Lee Worgan howler was punished as Maidstone were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Bognor Regis.

It led to the only goal of the game as United were beaten by Ryman League Bognor in Saturday’s first-round tie at the Gallagher.

Virtually nothing had happened before Worgan’s mistake handed the Rocks a 17th-minute lead.

There appeared to be no danger when the Stones captain came out of his area to take possession on the byline.

But he dallied and then tried to take the ball past Chike Kandi, who pinched it off him, broke into the box and finished from a tight angle.

Maidstone were reliant on Alex Flisher long throws but it was a corner from the winger that led to their first genuine chance midway through the half.

Manny Parry’s knockdown reached Frannie Collin who lifted his effort over the top.

Soon after, Jamie Coyle flashed a header wide from another Flisher missile.

United were struggling to make things happen so when the ball reached James Rogers some 30 yards out it was worth him going for goal, a cracking drive beaten away by Grant Smith who can’t have been expecting the shot.

Jason Prior’s control was poor when found by Kandi as Bognor missed the chance to add a second while at the other end Jay May’s scuffed volley was easily held.

Maidstone had more of a go in the second half with Bognor’s back four unsettled by balls in the box but the chances weren’t falling.

It wasn’t May’s day and he was replaced by Charles Banya just after the hour.

Banya looked the part straight away, bringing some spark to Maidstone’s play and laying on a decent chance for Matt Bodkin whose control let him down.

An even better opportunity fell to Collin when played in one-on-one by Flisher moving into the last 20 minutes but keeper Smith made the block.

Sami El-Abd headed wide from a near-post corner as Bognor went close from their first attack of the second half.

Prior then got the run on his man from a corner, sending a bullet header just over.
