Maidstone United 1 Sutton United 1 match report

Unlucky Jamie Coyle scored the first goal in front of Maidstone’s new North Stand - putting through his own net.

The ball went in off defender Coyle as Sutton took the lead early in the second half, although the goal was initially given to Adam Coombes.

But Jamar Loza’s soft penalty earned a point and extended Maidstone’s unbeaten run in the National League to six games.

There was a lovely touch before kick-off as Jay Saunders son, Fran, was chosen to open the packed new stand.

Fans on the £750,000 terrace created a magnificent atmosphere, with the occasion alone making up for the lack of goalmouth action in the first half.

Sutton were well on top early on, winger Roarie Deacon looking dangerous and hitting the outside of the post after a nice run.

Lee Worgan then pulled off a decent low save after Deacon fed former Welling man Adam Coombes on the edge of the box.

Maidstone, attacking the new stand, grew into it, working their way into some good positions around the Sutton area but lacking the final ball.

U’s keeper Will Puddy didn’t have a save to make while Tom Mills saw penalty appeals, for a trip, waved away just before the break.

Kevin Lokko stuck out a foot to block from Deacon at the start of the second half.

That was followed by the opening goal on 51 minutes, Kieron Cadogan’s near-post cross turned into his own net by Coyle as he tried to stop Coombes.

Maidstone finally worked Puddy after an hour, Joe Pigott’s shot hitting the keeper’s legs.

They levelled on 68 minutes through Loza’s penalty.

It looked soft as Loza went tumbling over Kevin Amankwaah but referee Rob Whitton pointed to the spot and the Stones striker buried his kick into the bottom corner.

Coombes missed a golden chance to restore Sutton’s lead seconds later and, as the game opened up, Loza’s pass went astray with Pigott waiting to finish.

Pigott then had another effort blocked by Puddy, with Stuart Lewis’ deflected strike hitting the bar moving into the last 10 minutes.

Maidstone: Worgan, Twumasi, Mills, Coyle, Lokko, Prestedge, Lewis, Paxman (Odubade 84mins), Oakley (Flisher 61mins), Pigott, Loza. Subs not used: Taylor, McCarthy, Okuonghae.

Attendance: 2,929.
