Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders says heads went down in 2-1 defeat at Dagenham

Jay Saunders felt Maidstone's heads went down in their Easter Monday defeat at Dagenham.

Manager Saunders was disappointed with the reaction to Fejiri Okenabirhie's 26th-minute opener for the Daggers.

It took the half-time team-talk to get the side going again and while they improved, Craig Robson added a clinching second for John Still's men.

Alex Wynter pulled one back but the Stones slipped to a third straight defeat in their battle for National League survival.

Saunders said: We weren't good enough in both boxes today.

"I don't think was a lot in the open play.

"First half, actually when they scored, we were having quite a good little spell in the game.

"What disappointed me is I thought our heads dropped after we conceded the goal for the rest of the first half.

"Then I thought we came out for the second half and had a real good go and again when they scored it was probably against the run of play a little bit.

"We've just got to keep going, get our heads up and keep going."

Maidstone barely forced a save from Daggers keeper Mark Cousins while conceding poor goals at the other end.

Saunders said: "We haven't solved the goalscoring problem and in the final third we're not clinical enough.

"The difference is when things are dropping in our box, like their two goals, they react.

"On the other side of that, we haven't got those ones that are going to nick the goals and that is obviously a problem and it has been since Christmas."

Maidstone remain five points clear of the relegation zone in 18th place following Solihull Moors' postponement at Tranmere.

They have five games left to secure safety.

Saunders said: "The players know what they've got to do. I knew it would be tough coming here today.

"I think they'd be more worried if we were going out and getting absolutely battered every week.

"Other than the last 20 minutes of the first half, where it wasn't acceptable, once we got in at half-time and said a few things, I thought they came out and reacted well and could have nicked something out of the game."
