Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders apologises to supporters after performance at Solihull

Jay Saunders apologised to travelling Maidstone fans after a damaging defeat at Solihull last night.

United lost 1-0 and are only three points clear of the National League relegation zone after Barrow beat Eastleigh.

The Cumbrians also have two games in hand.

Maidstone produced arguably their worst performance of the season and have only three games to save themselves.

Boss Saunders said: "The fans were good tonight. They stayed behind and we made sure we went over to see them and I can only apologise because at the moment we're not scoring goals and as a supporter that's what you come to football for, to see goals. We need them on our side."

Maidstone plans were disrupted when on-loan striker Ross Lafayette was recalled by Sutton.

They weren't in the game with Saunders making a double change at half-time - and he would have gone further.

He said: "Listen, if I'd had eight subs I'd have made eight subs and that's the simple fact. There was not enough at it tonight."

Tyrone Williams scored the only goal after Maidstone were caught out from a short corner midway through the first half, while going forward they created virtually nothing.

Saunders said: "Solihull were the better side. I don't think you can take that away.

"I'm disappointed with the goal we conceded. It's a short corner, Jai Reason switches off and then there's a cross and the lad taps it in.

"That's the real disappointment for me because as bad as we played, you don't concede that crap goal and you maybe come here and get a point but not good enough tonight.

"They're a side in good form, they're seven unbeaten, you can see what they're about.

"Their front three are a handful, they get it forward very quickly and put you on the back foot and that's what they did from the first minute, got us turned, got the front three chasing everything and it was difficult for us.

"Again we didn't look like we had a major threat up front.

"We had a chance early on that got blocked, by Greg Luer, but to be fair to their centre-halves they dealt with everything and deserved the three points.

"You've got to give them credit for that because they've got a lot of experienced players in their side, they've signed some really good players and that's why they're climbing away."
