Reaction from Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders after 0-0 draw with Dagenham

Jay Saunders wasn't surprised to hear Maidstone fans boo Kevin Lokko on his return to Maidstone.

Lokko, back at the Gallagher with loan club Dagenham yesterday, was jeered by sections of the home support every time he touched the ball.

A couple of chants were also aimed at the defender who left United for Stevenage on the eve of the season, only to be loaned straight out to Dagenham.

It's unusual for a returning player to get stick but Stones boss Saunders said: "I expected it if I’m honest with you. I’m sure Kev won’t take it too personally.

"It’s one of those things. He’s a good lad and he had a good spell with us. He was part of keeping us in the National League.

"As gutted as I was when it all happened we’ve moved on and I think Alex Wynter (Lokko's replacement) was outstanding again today."

Monday's draw against Dagenham followed victory over Sutton as Maidstone made it four points from the bank holiday weekend against the top two.

Saunders said: "I thought all in all it’s a good point for us.

"If that’s a Saturday game and we’re a bit fresher maybe we’d have kicked on and got all three but I thought both teams looked a little bit tired.

"We had a good chance in the first half - Delano Sam-Yorke's had a hell of a chance; he’s got to take that really - and all of a sudden it’s a different game.

"But over the bank holiday weekend if you’re asking me Sutton away, who were top, and then Dagenham at home, would you take four points, I’d have taken them."

Maidstone played the last 17 minutes against 10 men after Dagenham right-back Sam Ling was sent off for two bookings.

Stones may have been tired but the fitness was there to push on and they might have nicked it on another day.

Saunders said: "You could see the daytime training’s benefiting us.

"Our fitness levels were good again and we looked strong towards the end.

"We’ve just got to find that one little bit of quality but I thought they defended their box very well. Everything we put in, they dealt with.

"It’s always difficult. I’m not a big fan of the bank holiday games.

"I think it’s a big ask, especially when you’re in a league like this, it’s a relentless league, to then chuck a Saturday-Monday in."
