Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders on 1-0 defeat at Boreham Wood

Jay Saunders said Maidstone players gave him everything in their defeat at Boreham Wood.

Stones looked good defensively with a new back three of Alex Finney, Dean Beckwith and Will De Havilland and put in lots of effort.

They lost 1-0, making it 16 games without a win, but manager Saunders had few complaints with the performance against play-off contenders Wood.

They remain 17th in the National League but are now only five points clear of the bottom four.

Boss Saunders said: "I know it sounds crazy when you've lost 1-0 but there's plenty of positives, some good performances.

"Listen, it's a tough place to come, they're a very good side, they're right up there in the league and we've given them a good game.

"Second half, they haven't really caused us any problems and we were trying to take the game to them. We just couldn't get the breakthrough.

"I thought defensively, against one of the best front lines in the league, it was the best we've looked for a few weeks but it's irrelevant, we've still lost the game.

"The boys have given me everything tonight, I think you could tell by the supporters that were here at the end, they stood and clapped them off.

"I think they knew they've given everything and we'll continue to keep doing that."

Captain Stuart Lewis was sent off for the second time this season and will serve a two-game ban.

His first booking came for dissent after Angelo Balanta's disputed goal and he picked up a second yellow for a challenge on Mark Ricketts with just under 20 minutes left.

Saunders said: "I actually thought Stuart got the ball and the lad kicked into Stuart.

"The ref's adamant he didn't touch the ball but again at that speed it's hard to tell.

"I'd have to see it again but I personally thought as the ball bounced Stuart nicked it as the lad's gone to hook it and he's kicked into Stuart."
