Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders on 2-2 draw at Bromley

Jay Saunders liked the look of his new loan signings in Maidstone’s 2-2 draw at Bromley.

Blair Turgott’s goal earned United a point while Ross Lafayette was a handful up front and Dean Beckwith brought experience in defence.

Beckwith took one for the team in second-half injury time, picking up a second yellow card for bringing down Brandon Hanlan, but all in all it was a good day for Maidstone’s new boys.

Manager Saunders said: “I thought they did well.

“Ross was excellent up front and you could see what he’s all about.

“He should have scored - he’s had a one-on-one in the first half and he’s put it high over the bar - but what I liked was when it went up to him it stuck, he was a real handful for their centre-halves and they knew they were in a game.

“Dean at the back, his talking was excellent.

“I know he’s seen sent off - to be honest, he has to make that second challenge because if he doesn’t the lad’s through - but in general I thought he was good and he’ll be better for that 90 minutes because he needs games.

“And then Blair coming off the bench looked really good.

“He caused some problems, put some good balls in and took his goal well.”

Maidstone twice came from a goal down, Jamar Loza cancelling out Josh Rees’ fifth-minute opener and Turgott making it 2-2 after George Porter scored his customary goal against his old club.

It would have been easy to fold against an in-form Bromley side going for the play-offs but Maidstone, who stay 16th in the National League, deserved their point.

Saunders said: “When you’re chasing the game, to take a point is good. We needed it.

“It’s a good point away from home but we’ve got to start backing it up now.

“It was good for the lads to get something out of the game.

“To be honest, I thought the draw was a fair result.

“Both sides had good chances.

“You could see both sides struggled a little bit going down the slight slope here against the wind.

“It was hard but at times we played some good stuff.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game here today.

“They’re a team that are flying and so for me I’d have taken a point before kick-off.”
