Safety first for Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders

Jay Saunders has stressed the need to reach 50 points as Maidstone head to AFC Fylde.

United's National League play-off challenge has faltered after 11 games without a win.

They're 14th on 38 points going into tonight's rearranged game against an AFC Fylde team who beat leaders Macclesfield 6-0 at the weekend.

The priority for United is to clinch a third year at this level as soon as possible.

Boss Saunders said: "I said it earlier in the season, I want to get to 50 points, get safe and kick on and that's what we've got to concentrate on doing because we're not there.

"Until we're mathematically safe that's always the target, you get to 50 points and see where it takes you."

United were 2-1 down in October when the original fixture was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

Fylde were struggling to find their feet in the National League at the time but three months on they top the form guide and have 19-goal Danny Rowe wreaking havoc.

Saunders, who's missing Jamar Loza (groin) and Tom Wraight (hamstring), said: "They're flying at the moment.

"They're up there, they're in and around the play-offs now so a bit different to when we went there earlier in he season when they were lower down and struggling.

"They're a good side, they've got the boy Rowe up top scoring goals for them so it'll be a tough game.

"It's a long journey but it's one that's got to be done."
