Boss Jay Saunders believes there’s a feeling Maidstone United are going to cause an FA Cup upset.

It will take more than that to beat Vanarama Conference Welling in the final qualifying round at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday, but Stones are flying at the top of the Ryman League Premier Division and Saunders understands why so many people are behind his team.

Welling have struggled away and as late as Thursday hadn’t signed a goalkeeper to cover for the suspended Jamie Turner. They were, though, said to be considering a Charlton youngster who played against Maidstone’s academy on Wednesday.

Player-boss Jamie Day is banned but Wings have boosted their squad with Crystal Palace centre-half Michael Chambers.

Saunders said: “When you play teams above you, everyone needs to be on their game and you want one or two of theirs to have an off-day. If that happens then you never know.

“I’m putting across to the boys to go out and enjoy it. I do believe our team’s got goals in it and we’ve been decent at the back. Everyone has a feeling there’s going to be an upset.

“It all depends what happens on the day. If we hit the levels we reached in the first half against Leiston, there’s no reason why we can’t.”

Stones are missing cup-tied Phil Starkey and Alex Akrofi.
