Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders on his side's injury-time winner at Boreham Wood

It was Maidstone’s turn to benefit from a late goal as Jay Saunders marked his 300th game in charge with a victory.

Stones won 1-0 at Boreham Wood on Bank Holiday Monday thanks to Kevin Lokko’s fortunate injury-time goal.

Having lost to late strikes at Aldershot and Tranmere in the opening weeks of the National League season, United couldn't afford to feel too much sympathy.

Saunders, his side back in action 48 hours after a 4-1 defeat by Forest Green, said: "How many times do you say you play really well and you come away with nothing?

"We haven’t played to the best of our abilities today but we’ve come away with the win. That happens sometimes.

"There’s plenty of room for improvement but I’m never a big fan of the Saturday-Monday thing and I thought we tired badly in the second half.

"With the small squad we’ve got it was hard for us and, obviously with injuries, we had to change things which wasn’t ideal."

With midfielder Jack Paxman ruled out with a huge blister on the sole of his foot, Saunders made a late decision to switch to a three-man defence.

It proved effective with Wood struggling to find a way past Jamie Coyle, Lokko and Anthony Acheampong.

Stones did, though, finish with a back four after Acheampong went off injured.

Saunders said: "Coming away from home, first and foremost I didn’t really want to concede goals so we changed the shape slightly.

"We tried something different and I thought we looked quite solid with it and quite dangerous on the break first half.

"But that went out the window once Ach got injured and then I thought it took us too long to adjust back to the other shape."

Maidstone will look at a couple of trialists in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Leatherhead tonight (Tuesday).

Saunders said: "It’s always nice to win a game late on but there needs to be improvements in areas, we need to add players, the squad’s so small.

"I feel we need to add to it and hopefully we’ll be able to do that this week.

"I feel we need another option out wide, we need maybe another option up front.

"I’ve always been one, I don’t rush to get anyone in for the sake of it.

"We’ll be patient with it and I’m sure in the end we’ll get the right ones."
