Maidstone United boosted by player meeting

Senior Maidstone players called a squad meeting to address their poor form.

Lee Worgan, Stuart Lewis and Jai Reason approached manager Jay Saunders with the idea after last week’s defeat at Solihull.

Saunders agreed to the players-only meeting and United went on to beat Fylde.

Saunders said: “They got in and had a little chat together and whatever was said obviously helped as well because I think they know they let their standards slip on Tuesday which is hard because in recent weeks we’ve been unlucky but on Tuesday we just weren’t good enough.

“We’ll always take the blame as a management team and I’ll always bear the brunt of it because I’m the manager so I’m there to face it but I felt the players let us down Tuesday night and I think some of the senior players agreed and they just wanted to have a chat.

“You’ve got to remember we’ve got a lot of young lads from pro clubs who’ve not gone to Solihulls in a relegation battle, so they just wanted to have a little chat with them and reiterate some of the things I said.

“Sometimes when you’ve got fellow players telling you, it comes from a different angle and sometimes it helps.”
