Maidstone United require a fee for transfer-listed defender Tom Mills

Jay Saunders says Tom Mills won't be allowed to leave Maidstone for nothing.

Mills, 25, remains on the transfer list almost a month after turning down a new contract.

There's been interest in the left-back who's on his way out of the Gallagher after 341 appearances in seven years, but United are yet to receive a formal offer.

Manager Saunders is planning further talks with Mills in a bid to resolve his future.

He said: "Dartford, Margate and Chelmsford have made enquiries.

"I spoke to Millsy briefly last week to see what was going on and I need to have another chat with him today.

"Hopefully something will happen before pre-season.

"We made him a very good offer and he decided not to take it.

"I had to make a decision. Joe Anderson had a lot of interest and I felt I couldn't keep hanging on.

"It's a case of agreeing something with a club but it won't be a free transfer, that definitely won't happen.

"There's been interest but it's also up to Millsy and whether they're clubs he wants to go to.

"It's a shame we weren't able to agree something with him but it happens."
