Maidstone United dedicate Woking victory to memory of Jason Munn

Maidstone dedicated their victory over Woking to the memory of supporter Jason Munn.

Much-loved Jason died from cancer last week.

There was a minute's applause before kick-off and again in the 54th minute as United beat Woking 3-1 at the Gallagher yesterday.

Stones boss Jay Saunders told his players to go and win the game for Jason during his pre-match team-talk.

The players drew inspiration from a message sent by Jason's widow, Lesley, to Stones captain Lee Worgan.

Saunders said: "Lesley sent a lovely message to Worgs and we had it up on the board in the changing room and it was part of the team-talk to try and get three points for him.

"We wanted that workrate and desire and I thought it was there today.

"It was a lovely moment with the minute's applause and again in the game.

"He was someone all the boys were close to.

"It's terrible news but luckily we got the three points for him and I'm sure we'll see Lesley at every game and we'll look after her."

Delano Sam-Yorke got off the mark against his former club, unaware Saunders was close to leaving him out.

The striker, who had a second goal ruled out, put Maidstone 2-0 up after Zavon Hines had opened the scoring. Joe Pigott added the third.

Saunders said: "If I'm being brutally honest, on probably Wednesday he was dropped and then last night he was back in.

"I did consider it but then in the back of your head, as we found out when he played against us last year, you always come back to haunt old clubs.

"I'm just gutted he didn't get the second goal because it's a goal for me.

"Even their manager on the bench has said it wasn't a foul but his workrate was excellent and he was back to what I thought he was when he was here last season.

"I'm pleased for him and all the boys are delighted for him.

"He's a good lad, his attitude hasn't changed, he's kept his head up and he's kept working for the team.

"As long as you're doing that then your luck will change in front of goal. It's on his left foot and he's taken it very well."

Midfielder Reece Prestedge excelled on his return after sitting out the last two matches.

Saunders said: "Reece was excellent. When you're going in as attacking as we did, he needed to be in there, he needed to be that one who just gives you that sort of safety if you like. I was delighted for him.

"It's a squad game and it's really hard on Jai Reason and Jack Paxman, because they've been playing well, but it's one of them."
