Maidstone United went out of the FA Cup in controversial circumstances on Saturday afternoon.

They had five players booked and Tom Mills sent off - wrongly - in a 2-0 home defeat by Skrill South Boreham Wood in the third qualifying round at the Gallagher Stadium.

The visitors were more streetwise than Ryman League Premier Division United in drawing decisions from referee Nigel Lugg.

But Wood also ended with 10 men after Donovan Simmonds saw red following an off-the-ball incident late on.

Stones had the clearer chances in a cagey first half that saw both sides struggle to keep the ball.

Zak Attwood hit the side-netting after Orlando Smith intercepted a poor clearance.

Attwood later latched on to a perfect Alex Brown pass but rushed his effort, while a Brown cross from Smith's tidy pass just needed a touch.

Boreham Wood wasted their best opportunity to work Worgan with Simmonds lashing over after Smith was caught trying to play out of defence.

Maidstone fell behind on 56 minutes when the unfortunate Jack Sullivan headed a long throw into his own net.

A penalty eight minutes later, awarded following strong appeals from the Wood bench, ended United hopes with Luke Garrard beating Worgan.

The second goal knocked the stuffing out of Stones.

They looked to make a game of it by throwing on a third striker in Paul Booth but were reduced to 10 men when Mills was dismissed by Lugg despite a perfectly-timed challenge to win the ball from Simmonds as he raced in on goal.

Maidstone had men all over the place - big centre-half Jerrome Sobers popping up on the right wing - as they threw everything at Wood in the closing stages but all to no avail.

Maidstone: Worgan, Sullivan (Hill 79mins), Mills, Watt, Sobers, Phillips, Smith (Booth 66mins), Brown, Attwood, Collin, Flisher. Subs not used: Lye, Saraiva, Robertson, Andrews, Mitten.

Attendance: 1,781.
