Former player Steve Watt returns to Maidstone United as assistant manager

Ex-Maidstone United player Steve Watt has returned to the Gallagher Stadium as part of the club's management team.

The 33-year-old former centre-half has been named as assistant boss to Jay Saunders.

The appointment, announced on Friday, marks a swift return to the game for Watt who left his job as Margate manager by mutual consent on Monday.

He replaces Nicky Southall who left the Stones earlier this month.

Watt was a popular figure as a player at the Gallagher where he returns after a two-and-a-half year absence.

He originally joined the Stones from Dover Athletic in March 2013, following a month on loan, and made 89 appearances.

Watt was made club captain at the start of the 2013/14 season and lifted the Robert Dyas League Cup in 2014 and the Ryman Premier Division trophy in 2015.

Before becoming manager at Hartsdown Park, he was assistant manager of Hastings United.

Watt succeeded Nikki Bull as boss at Hartsdown in February 2017 and in his first full season led Margate to seventh in Bostik Premier just two points adrift of Leiston, who filled the fifth and final play-off spot.
