Maidstone United goalkeeper Lee Worgan on his outfield heroics against Aldershot

Goalkeeper Lee Worgan is basking in the glory of his outfield efforts for Maidstone.

Worgan, who’d stayed up following an injury-time corner, retrieved the ball outside the area and found Jai Reason, whose cross was met by Josh Hare for a 95th-minute equaliser against Aldershot on Tuesday night.

Several goalkeepers have scored from corners over the years but Worgan’s composure as a makeshift outfield player marks him out from the crowd.

He said: “I said to myself if we get a corner now I’m definitely going up but I did look over at the bench and they said you might as well go.

“There was no point running back, it wouldn’t have made any difference at that point.

“I’ve had it myself where a keeper comes up, it gets people thinking and you get thrown a bit.

“Fortunately as the ball’s come out, I managed to remain composed, get it out wide and it’s a great cross by Jai Reason and a great header from Josh Hare.

“The adrenaline’s pumping - you see your name in lights.

“I wanted to turn and have a shot really but Jai was screaming at me so I thought it was best to go safe and get it out wide.”

Worgan was outstanding in goal as Maidstone held a classy Aldershot side.

He rated his point-blank stop from Matt McClure’s header as his best save.

Worgan said: “I think that was the best one, just because I’ve anticipated the cross coming in and I’ve managed to turn pretty quickly.

“When you’re in that position, seeing the ball early is key, I’ve managed to do that and get a fingertip on it and get it over the bar.

“Aldershot are a really good side - you’ve got to give them credit.

“They play very open, attacking football and I was saying to the boys I’ll be surprised if they don’t score in every game this season.

“It was end-to-end and it was just as good to play in as I’m sure it was to watch. It was a good advert for the National League.”
