Bikers angry at police after stinger spotted in Wrotham

A group of bikers surrounded a police officer after seeing a stinger next to a busy road in Wrotham.

A video clip posted to Facebook, viewed more than a million times, shows at least eight motorcyclists, some of whom are berating the officer as he picks the spike strip up off the ground and takes it back to his car.

The incident took place on London Road in Wrotham on Wednesday evening.

In the clip people can be heard telling the officer that using the device against a motorcyclist could bring them off their bike and even kill them.

But Kent Police said the stinger wasn't deployed or put on the road at any stage.

In a statement, the force said: "At 8.22pm on Wednesday 6 July 2016, Kent Police received several reports of dangerous driving in London Road, Wrotham.

"Officers attended the scene to ensure public safety and attempted to engage with the biking community who had gathered at the location."

"A 'stinger' device was not deployed and there was no intention to deploy it. This was simply a visual deterrent to prevent unlawful activity and to protect the public from harm.

"Officers are continuing to make enquiries relating to anti-social behaviour and dangerous driving."

A stinger is a strip of spikes that can be used by police to stop a vehicle by puncturing its tyres.
