Travellers who arrived at land off Castle Way, Leybourne have now left

A large group of travellers who moved on to a site in Leybourne have moved on today.

The 100-strong group, who began to arrive at the green space at Castle Way in the village on Thursday evening, had around 20 caravans, along with other cars and vans.

Locals were concerned as the area they settled on included the children's play area.

Tonbridge and Malling council applied to magistrates for an order telling them to leave by today.

This morning the clean-up operation began, which included removing human waste. It was organised by the borough council and carried out by contractors.

Large granite blocks were put at the point where the travellers gained access and a new fence has been ordered.

Leybourne Parish Council is to organise a public meeting to review how the situation was handled.

Chairman Cllr Bob Ulph said: “There are a lot of people asking questions about what went wrong. We felt it was in the interests of the public to have this meeting. We will be inviting senior officials from the borough council and the police.”

He said the parish council had been inundated with calls, and he was aware many residents had also called the police with concerns.
