Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II among paintings by Bernard Hailstone housed at Hadlow Tower to be sold at auction

An upcoming studio sale will auction off paintings formerly housed a Kent landmark.

The portraits by Bernard Hailstone, an official war-time painter.

The collection has recently been discovered at Hadlow Tower, near Tonbridge, where Hailstone lived for many years.

Having been educated at The Judd School, he attended Goldsmiths College of Art, and later the Royal Academy Schools.

Portraits in the collection include the last remaining portrait of Queen Elizabeth II completed by the artist - the other having been destroyed in fire - and a portrait of Laurence Olivier originally commissioned for the Garrick Club.

The lots are being auctioned by Special Auction Services in Newbury, Berkshire.

Sixty lots will go under the hammer in September, with the first part being sold this coming Tuesday.

Included in this auction will be an oil painting and a pastel sketch of HRH The Queen Mother.

Some items in the auctions will be sold with props or photographs used during the sittings.

One example is that of a preparatory pastel sketch of Prince Charles, which will be sold with the army style jumper he wore for the sitting.

Neil Shuttleworth, director at Special Auction Services, said: "We are delighted to bring this studio collection to market.

"There is a fascinating array of portraits that range from royalty and nobility to actors and everyday people, thus highlighting the extent of his commissions.

"The auction offers an affordable means of purchasing the work of a renowned early 20th century British war and royal portrait artist."
