West Malling: Help remember Ruby Shaw who died leaving only one close relative

Warm-hearted people are being urged to attend the funeral of West Malling resident Ruby Shaw.

Mrs Shaw (nee Austin) died recently aged 92 and nephew Fred is the only mourner due to attend the service on Monday.

In a Facebook appeal, the Rev David Green asked anyone who remembers her, or husband George, to join the ceremony.

Mr Green said: "It seems such a shame that so very few of us will be there to pray for her as we say goodbye.

"I would hope in a lovely community like ours that no one ought to ever be forgotten or passed over; least of all when we leave this world and enter into God's heavenly rest."

Mrs Shaw's parents lived in Frog Lane and she married her husband in 1943 when he was stationed in the RAF base at West Malling during the Second World War.

The couple didn't have a family together and George died aged 44. His wife spent nearly 50 years as a widow.

Mr Green added: "If anyone might remember the Shaws or the Austins and would like to come on Monday to pay their respects and ensure that Ruby doesn't leave this world almost entirely alone, then please feel free to come and perhaps leave a comment here to tell us you're coming so we know how many to expect.

"Please feel free to share this post so that others get to see it and hopefully some folk out there might remember Ruby and George and want to come.

"If you feel motivated to come anyway even if you never had the privilege of knowing Ruby, you're most welcome too."

The funeral is at St Mary the Virgin Church in High Street from 11am on Monday, April 10. If you would like to attend you can comment on Mr Green's Facebook appeal, here.
