Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch says she is working to help staff affected by Aylesford Newsprint's decision to call in the administrators.

MP Tracey Crouch says she will do all she can to help the hundreds of staff affected by Aylesford Newsprint's decision to call in the administrators.

The paper manufacturing firm based in New Hythe Business Park, employs more than 300 people.

Last night the Chatham and Aylesford MP met with business minister Matt Hancock to discuss what could be done to support the company and its workers.

It is not clear whether it will go into liquidation, be subject to a takeover or sell its assets.

She said: "Those discussions will occur but it may be three months before that is known. It could be sooner but no-one knows at this stage."

But Miss Crouch said what was certain is that staff would be supported if any redundancies were made.

She said: "The JobCentre have already set up a dedicated rapid response team for affected staff to offer advice on alternative employment and, if needed, benefits advice. I have offered to work with Unite to contact other mills in the county to see if they have vacancies or opportunities for those with specific skills.

"The people most affected by the news yesterday can be assured that the support structures are being put in place to help them if the worst happens and the plant closes.

"In the meantime I shall continue to liaise closely with the Business Minister, the unions, the local JobCentre and local councils."
