EastEnders' Anita Dobson starred in a docudrama filmed at Penshurst Place last night

Fresh from its starring role in BBC2's Wolf Hall, Kent's Penshurst Place is back on our screens with a three-part docudrama, Armada: 12 days to save England.

Starring former EastEnder Anita Dobson as Queen Elizabeth I, the first part was broadcast on BBC2 last night (Sunday).

Filming took place at the historic house near Tonbridge over five days in November and December during which the Baron's Hall, Sunderland Room and the medieval Buttery were dressed for the time of Queen Elizabeth I's court.

The drama will show how the Queen evaded the planned Spanish Armada invasion in 1588, drawing on newly-discovered 16th century documents.

Estate manager Ben Thomas said: "Each year Penshurst Place runs the ‘Great Armada’, a living history event for local schools and weekend visitors where the household prepare for impending invasion by the Spanish fleet.

"Seeing the state rooms and Baron’s Hall dressed to become the court of Elizabeth I really bought to life the authentic period architecture in the house that has remained remarkably unchanged since the 15 century."

The house is a popular filming location, having also featured in the Tudor drama Wolf Hall, the Great Fire and The Other Boleyn Girl.

The next episode of Armada will be broadcast next Sunday.
