Police are appealing for witnesses after recovering a huge haul of cannabis in a derelict building in Hoo.

Officers were called to Sturdee Sports and Social Club in Stoke Road at 1.30pm on May 24, after it was reported several cannabis plants had been found.

Upon arrival, officers discovered in excess of 800 plants in the building - thought to be one of the largest hauls of the drug recovered in Medway - along with equipment set-up for production.

The plants were seized and will be destroyed.

Now Kent Police is appealing for people with information about the discovery to come forward.

Investigating officer, DC Sanj Tanday, said: "This is one of the biggest hauls of cannabis we have ever discovered in Medway, and it’s estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

"Seizing this number of plants is extremely significant, as there is no doubt they would otherwise be sold and distributed widely.

"We are asking anybody who has any information about this cannabis farm to come forward by calling us on 101, quoting crime reference XY/15808/13, or call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

"Sometimes people ask us how to spot cannabis factories. Some of the tell-tale signs are lights being left on all day and night, windows covered, high humidity and a pungent smell, and lots of different people coming and going – although no one actually living there.

"If you’re suspicious about a property in your area, let us know."

  • A 37-year-old man and a 43-year-old man, both from Dartford, have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the production of cannabis and abstracting electricity. Both have been bailed until August 5, pending further enquiries.
