Blaze in terrace roof in Gillingham

Firefighters were called out to a house fire in Brompton in the early hours of Friday morning

Three fire engines were set out to a terraced house in Prospect Row at about 1.47am after the occupants, an elderly man and his son, smelt burning and dialed 999.

Both were able to get out of the property without any injuries and when firefighters arrived they found a fire had broke out in a roof void in the three-storey building.

Two crews from Medway and one from Strood fire station were sent to the scene. Firefighters believe the fire may have been caused by an electrical cable which may have got hot and burnt through something in the roof area.

Firefighters had to cut away at ceilings and walls inside the property to find the seat of the fire but were able to put the flames out before they caused too much damage.

All crews had left the property by 4am.
