Thousands run the Medway Mile 2017

Rochester's historic streets were pounded by thousands of running shoes as an army of runners - and one shark - took on the Medway Mile 2017.

More than 3,000 runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities came together for the annual event - which sees participants set off from Rochester castle and complete a one mile course through the streets before finishing back in the castle grounds.

Before the main event the competitive adult races were hotly contested, with George Duggan just pipping fellow Tonbridge AC runner Sean Malloy to the post in the men's race, and 14-year-old Alexandra Baker-Jones taking first place in the women's event.

But it wasn't just about who ran the fastest, and some of the biggest cheers were reserved for the youngest and oldest runners, or those who had overcome disabilities to get around the course.

The mascot race provided further entertainment - with Apex Predators' mascot Shark adapting perfectly to conditions on dry land to destroy the opposition and coast home in the first place.

And there was a wealth of fun and games on offer, with a decathlon of sporting challenges, a giant slide, climbing wall, and all-round party atmosphere inside the castle grounds.

First staged in 2007, the Medway Mile was Medway’s flagship annual event counting down to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and continued as a legacy of the Games, becoming a firm fixture on Medway’s event calendar.

All runners got a T-shirt and medal, and the day was rounded off with a magnificent fireworks display.

The Medway Mile is organised by the Medway Sport team and Medway Council’s events team, in partnership with the A Better Medway campaign.
