An inquest has been opened into the death of a teenager killed as he walked home on New Year's Day.

Augustine Carnell, 17, from Rochester, died in a crash on Blue Bell Hill in the early hours.

Paramedics attended the accident, which involved a white Skoda Rapid, on the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A229. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner Alison Grief, sitting at the Archbishop's Palace in Maidstone, opened and adjourned the inquest until April 9.

The hearing heard the King's School, Rochester, pupil died from multiple injuries.

Augustine was a keen rugby player, both at King's and Aylesford Bulls.

A minute's silence was held at Aylesford's home ground at the weekend.

Augustine, who was in his second season, was in the under-17s team. His side postponed their fixture as a mark of respect and will be dedicating their match against Gravesend on Sunday to him.

Prayers have been said for him at King's, where he was a pupil from the age of four.

In a statement, his family described Augustine as a "kind, gentle, happy 17-year-old boy full of fun and humour".
