Car fire on M2 between Chatham and Gillingham

Traffic was temporarily held on a motorway due to a car fire.

Vehicles travelling coastbound on the M2 between junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester and junction 4 for Gillingham were stopped for about 20 minutes just after 6pm.

A dramatic video shows a car engulfed in flames with thick black smoke billowing into the air.

Fire crews were called at 5.35pm and stood down at 6.03pm.

The vehicle was destroyed in the blaze and no injuries were reported.

KCC Highways tweeted about the incident shortly after 6pm and said drivers should expect long delays.

"M2 J3- J4 coastbound: Traffic is being held on the M2 between J3 and J4 due to a vehicle fire," the tweet said.

"Emergency services are attending."

There have also been delays on the A2 in Gillingham, at the junction with Darland Avenue, after an accident outside the petrol station involving a car and a van.
