Police cordon off part of Chatham town centre after body found

A body has been discovered in a tent in the centre of Chatham.

Police were called to Dock Road just after 11.30am today after they received reports that a man had been found dead.

The body was discovered in a tent on the grass area between the Army Careers office and Fort Amherst, almost directly opposite the Riverside One studio.

It is not clear at this stage how the man died, but police are not treating the death as suspicious.

It is thought the man was homeless.

A spokesman for police in Medway said: "Police were called to Dock Road, Chatham at 11.37am this morning following a report that the body of a man had been found.

Annie Miles Tuppenney said: “According to another page it was someone who stayed in a tent. Seems like he had been living in a tent for a while."

Suzanne Guscott added: “Apparently a man in a green tent who used it to sleep in at Fort Amherst. Police and ambulance there.”
