Presley Badwah, from Gillingham, empties money box to give gift to Salvation Army

A kind little boy emptied his money box to buy a toy for a child who would not have any presents to open on Christmas Day.

Five-year-old Presley Badwah had been saving up to buy something for himself but after watching the film Home Alone 2 and realising some children might be alone at Christmas, he decided to spend it on a gift for another child.

Presley used the £12 he had saved to buy a Captain America and Iron Man walkie talkie set from Asda Gillingham.

Dad Ricky Badwah, 31, of Burnt Oak Terrace, Gillingham, said: “Presley said he would like to give the toy to a child without a mummy or daddy so he dropped it in the Salvation Army trolley at Asda.

“He made me very proud as we had spoken about children who will be alone this Christmas after watching Home Alone 2 and he remembered.

“He believes Santa will get the trolley from Asda and drop the gifts off to kids without mums or dads at Christmas.

“Hopefully other children may do the same and donate a present.”

Presley will also be doing another good deed today when he helps out the Christmas fair at Valence Special School, Westerham, where his dad works as an IT manager.

The Salvation Army’s toy appeal gave gifts to more than 400 children across Medway last year and the charity is expecting to help even more this year.

Chatham and Strood Salvation Army is asking for presents for children aged up to 15, preferably new and unwrapped.

Community services manager Eric Slater said: “I delivered to a family last year and the lady opened the door and her little girl said, ‘Who’s this mummy?’, and she said, ‘This is your Father Christmas this year’.

“It’s very likely that a lot of our families wouldn’t have toys or support if it wasn’t for the Salvation Army and the generosity of local people.”

The charity tries to give each child two presents and their family will receive a box of biscuits, Christmas pudding, custard and selection boxes.

All presents should be donated by Tuesday as the Salvation Army will start delivering gifts the following day.

Drop off any toys in any Boots shop in Medway, or call Mr Slater on 07789 225371 to organise a collection.
