A mum has spoken of her anger after her car, which was full of her son's war memorabilia worth £1,500, was stolen from outside her home.

Valerie Whitehouse's Honda Civic was taken from her home in Windsor Road, Gillingham.

In it was the collection of uniforms and memorabilia her son Julio had been collecting for almost 10 years.

The car was packed ready for them to go to the War and Peace show in Folkestone when it was stolen.

A man was jailed for three months at Medway Magistrates' Court after buying the car for just £25.

Speaking after the verdict, Mrs Whitehouse said: "We lost so much, it’s unbelievable.

"You can’t imagine as a mum having to tell your son all of the stuff he’s been collecting for years and years has been taken."

Ashley Robinson, 28, was caught by police in the vehicle in Gillingham.

Robinson, of Trafalgar Avenue, intended to use the car to get to a court appearance in Maidstone when he was stopped by police.

He admitted a charge of handling stolen goods when he appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court.

The same charge against another man, his 41-year-old housemate Barry Treays, was dropped.

Robinson was also charged with two counts of possessing a Class A drug, crack cocaine and heroin, which were found in the car.

He was sentenced to three months for handling stolen goods and one month for possession of the drugs.

The two sentences will run concurrently, and the time Robinson has spent in custody will count as time served.

The war memorabilia and military uniforms have not been found.
