Kickboxing club struggles to find new premises in the Medway Towns

A kickboxing club that prides itself on instilling a sense of respect into its youngsters is looking for a new home.

The Paul Wiffen Kickboxing Academy rents a space in Queens Road, Gillingham, but this has been sold, and Mr Wiffen and his 150 loyal members are looking for somewhere else to go.

Steve Gull has been involved with the club for 10 years and his son, aged four, and daughter, seven, go to classes there.

He said: “There aren’t that many youth clubs around the Medway Towns.

“I’ve seen first hand what a great influence this club has on children.

“I pushed my kids to go along and said, ‘if you don’t like it you never have to go again’. They fell in love with it straight away.

“Every kid that comes in the door gets it spelt out to them that this isn’t a place to exercise an ego. It’s all about respect.

“Obviously, it is a contact sport, and we have people who fight competitively in shows across the country. But that’s only about 5%. The rest are there for fun or to lose weight, and it’s a mix of men and women.”

Members range in age from just three years old to 72.

Open six days a week for boxing, personal training, and jujitsu among other things, the academy currently shares a space with other clubs.

Mr Gull said they needed their own place in the Towns, as the club continued to grow but that has proved trickier than expected.

After looking at a few places without the necessary planning consent, and being told by the council that granting a change of use would be unlikely, the club is looking for a unit with the right consent in place.

They need to find somewhere, ideally a warehouse or industrial unit, within four months so they can be set up by March. It needs to have parking for members, and be around 2,500 sq ft.
