First steels bolted in for Medway's University Technology College in Chatham Docks

Building work has only just started, but the popularity of Medway’s new University Technology College is already outstripping those already built.

The construction of the college (UTC) took a significant step forward on Monday when the first steelwork for the framework was bolted into place.

But the new-style school is already proving to be a hit with people in Medway and further afield, as more people have applied to this UTC for 2015 than any other across the country.

On Monday afternoon principal Dr Karon Buck revealed: “There’s lots of young people waiting to take up their places here. I know we’re on the top of the leader board for people applying to UTCs for next year.

“We’re doing very well and it’s going to be fantastic opportunity for young people.”

On the day the lead contractor for the new building at Chatham Docks, Bowmer and Kirkland, put up the first steel work.

The groundworks at the 26-acre site, which forms part of the Chatham Waters development, have been carried out since late September.

The Mayor of Medway, Cllr Barry Kemp, had a go at turning the screws with a giant spanner, as did Dr Buck.

Local politicians, members of the governing body and the sponsors of the UTC, including BAE Systems, were also on site for the event.

More than 20 organisations have pledged their support, including property firm Land Securities and construction company BAM.

The £10 million school, for pupils aged 14 to 19, will specialise in engineering and construction, alongside core GCSE and A-level subjects.

Dr Buck added: “It really is a momentous occasion. Marking the start of this new school for this area is really important for everyone involved.”

The advert for the vice-principal closes today and a candidate will be chosen in December.

Lessons will be from 8.30am to 5pm, to reflect a normal working day, and students will not be required to wear a uniform or do any homework.

The school is due to open in September next year, with two year groups, Year 10 and Year 12, with 150 pupils in each year.
