Jayne Snow wins parking ticket battle with Medway Council over fine for parking in Cathedral Garage car park, Rochester

Jayne Snow took on Medway Council after getting a parking ticket in Rochester - and won.

The 26-year-old was shocked when she was handed a fine for parking at the Cathedral Garage car park for straying over the allocated bay lines.

She said: “It was a gut feeling, but I have used that car park many times and I thought something was wrong.”

She dashed back to her home in Haig Avenue, Rochester, and started to look into the matter.

She went onto the council website and armed with her evidence and a tape measure, returned to the car park a few hours later.

It turned out the size of the bay fell well short of the council’s own parking space dimensions.

It measured 3.76 metres in length instead of 4.8 metres which would have been comfortably large enough for Miss Snow’s Huyundai Santa Fe 4 by 4.

The professional musician then turned to Facebook Live to broadcast a video making drivers aware of the issue.

She added: “It wasn’t about the amount of money, it was the principle. It’s all too easy to take things lying down, rolling over and pay up.

“I would urge others to do the same. Check your evidence, do your research and stand up to authority.”

Miss Snow’s video has gone viral with more than 113,000 views.

A Medway Council spokesman said: “A penalty charge notice should not have been issued in this instance. We are sorry for this mistake and the ticket has been cancelled.

“The document referred to by Ms Snow refers to planning standards for parking spaces and on street parking within new developments.

“There isn’t currently any legislation which sets out a standardised size for spaces in public car parks.”
