Crews called after man found dead at Chatham dockyard

Emergency services have been called following the discovery of a body at Chatham Historic Dockyard.

Four police cars, along with ambulance crews, firefighters and HM Coastguard are at the scene.

Boat crews and divers were seen entering one of the docks containing HMS Gannet.

One bystander said: "It's not been confirmed but they think it's a body. It looks like they're going into the dock under the boat.

"They said out of respect they can't give any more information. They've cordoned it off and asked people to take children away."

Kent Police said they were called at 11.27am to a "report of a body in the water at Chatham Docks."

They said officers were assisted the Kent Coastguard and Kent Fire and Rescue Service in the recovery of the body.

A man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the incident however his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police said a report is being compiled for the coroner and his next of kin have been made aware.
