Women have been giving evidence about sexual abuse they claim they suffered at the hands of a family doctor.

One patient said she was left feeling shocked and violated after she was examined by Dr Babatunde Oshinusi.

She went to St Mary's Medical Centre, in Strood, suffering from sickness and diarrhoea following a holiday in February 2007.

The woman, then 36, said she needed a medical certificate for work and explained the symptoms.

Screened from the dock by curtains, she told a jury at Maidstone Crown Court: "He told me he needed to examine me. He asked me to go onto the bed and remove my lower garments.

"I felt uncomfortable. However, being in a position of trust, I just complied. I asked him: 'Do you mean all of the clothing?' He said: 'Yes.' I lay on the bed with a paper towel over me.

"No chaperone was offered. He proceeded to feel around my abdomen area, which I would expect a doctor to do. It seemed quite normal."

But, she continued, Oshinusi then told her to face the wall, leaving her back area "on display".

"I was in quite a shocked state and I didn't understand why I was being asked to do this," she said. "I just complied. I wondered in the back of my mind whether something was wrong."

Oshinusi proceeded to carry out an intimate examination, she claimed.

"No explanation was given to me why he was doing this," she said. "I felt awful. I was in absolute panic mode at that point. My heart was going. I felt violated.

"I couldn't understand why he was doing that to me. I thought I would have a chaperone or be pre-warned about this. He didn't give me any reassurance. He didn't ask for permission to do it.

"He told me to get dressed. I felt very shaky. I asked him why he did it. He said he needed to see if I was dehydrated. I knew in my head it was wrong.

"He confirmed I had gastroenteritis and wrote a certificate for work. I went home in absolute... I didn't know where I was. My head was spinning.

“I was in a state of shock. I didn't drive home, I walked. I spoke to a friend and said: 'I can't believe what happened. I was in a daze all day. It was awful.

"I had an appointment booked for a smear test. I just couldn't face going. I felt very let down by the whole surgery.

"I phoned the surgery and spoke to the manager. It came out I wasn't happy with the examination. She said: '‘You need to put that in writing.'"

Oshinusi, of Tunbury Avenue, Walderslade, Chatham, is accused of sexually assaulting six women, including a pensioner aged 81, at the surgery between 2007 and 2010.

The 43-year-old GP denies 12 charges of assault by penetration and three of sexual assault.
