A drunk driver who caused the death of a woman in a horror motorway crash is in custody facing a jail sentence.

Ion Rusu was about two-and-a-half times the legal driving limit when his Peugeot 206 crashed into Mohini Arora’s BMW on the coastbound carriageway near junction 11a for the Channel Tunnel shortly before 10pm on Sunday, November 13 last year.

The 25-year-old Romanian, of College Avenue, Gillingham, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving when he appeared at Maidstone Crown Court today.

An inquest heard Miss Arora, 25, originally from India, was thrown from her car as she swerved off the motorway. She was pronounced dead at the scene from head and neck injuries.

Miss Arora studied at Regent’s University in London and was working for marketing firm AJG Direct in the capital.

Sentence was adjourned until July 21 to enable the victim’s family to travel from India for the hearing.

Rusu, who comes from Moldova, had been on conditional bail, but Judge Julian Smith remanded him in custody.

“You will receive credit for your plea,” said the judge. “The only sentence that will be passed is one of custody. The length of that sentence is yet to be resolved.”
