A loving family have told of their 'huge' heartache - after losing a mother and daughter in the same crash.

The family of Elsie Blades, 84, and her 60-year-old daughter Marilyn Herlihy have spoken of their sorrow at not seeing their mum or Gran again - and their sadness that neither will witness family weddings or future children.

Both women were killed in an accident on Sunday on Station Road, Strood.

Mum of two Elsie leaves behind her son David, his wife Colleen and their two children Reece and Aiden. Marilyn was married to Derek and also had two children, 34-year-old Liz and 26-year-old Gordon.

Although a small family, they were extremely close.

In a statement issued today Elsie is described as a selfless woman, who knitted baby clothes for hospice Demelza House, had been a Brown Owl and did volunteer work with newborn babies.

A Women's Institute member, she had worked in a munitions factory in the Second World War.

Son David explained how his mum was always there for the family and was happy in her role as a dedicated wife and mother. She was supportive and caring and would always wave the family off from the doorstep after a visit.

Her daughter Marilyn was a loving wife and mother, described as "selfless and always keen to put everyone before herself."

The statement continues: "She was a great fan of nature and the outdoor life and the family enjoyed numerous camping holidays, which they went on with Marilyn’s best friend Carol and her family.

"The family will miss both women immensely and have described the impact their deaths have had as huge.

"Liz and Gordon explained how hard it is knowing that they will not see their mum or Gran again and that neither will be there when they marry and have children of their own."
