Farewell gig to old capmus

by Jenni Horn

Staff will begin moving into the new multi-million pound MidKent College campus today (Monday).
The £86 million Medway campus in Medway Road, Gillingham, will replace the existing sites in Maidstone Road, Chatham, and City Way, Rochester, which closed in July.
Students said farewell to their old college buildings with a live music event organised by the music department and the Students’ Union.
Paul Clark, MP for Gillingham and Rainham, joined the students at the farewell gathering, alongside principal of the new campus, Sue McLeod.
Mr Clark said: “Any building is only as good as the people within it. Without doubt, it is the many thousands of people who have learned here over the past 53 years that combine to make this site so unique.”
The farewell event featured live music from a number of student bands.
Sam Craddock was one of many selected to perform on the day.
The 19-year-old guitarist, from St Mary’s Island, said: “The move to the new campus is going to provide us with some great new facilities but we’ll still be sad to see this site go.”
Staff will spend the next few weeks getting ready for the new campus to open its doors in September when term begins.
Facilities at the site, which will be able to accept 30 per cent more students than the existing two centres, include plumbing and engineering workshops, hairdressing salons, holistic therapy rooms, a professional dance and drama studio and student chill-out zones.
The campus will have a bistro, florist, travel agents and hair and beauty salon, which will be staffed by the students and open to the public.
